Legacy and Tradition: Stanford Fencing

Renaissance Man, Harry Maloney began the fencing program at Stanford at the Woodpecker Lodge on the Stanford campus in 1891. Fencing was officially adopted as a "Minor Sport" in 1916 and began to win trophies by 1917. In 1932 Roble Gym opened as a women's gymnasium, providing space for women fencers. Both men and women fencers used Roble from 1936 until 2005 with the exception of WWII years when Roble was a temporary infirmary.

By 2005 John Arrillaga had built the extraordinary fencing facility in the Arrillaga Sports and Recreation Center and the Team moved to their new home, where they are located today. (See Fencing Salle section of this web site)
